How to Return an Item to Amazon: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hi friends! In this article, I'm going to show you the step-by-step process for returning an item to Amazon. Many people find this process intimidating, but it's actually pretty easy.

Step 1: Access Your Orders

Start by going to the Amazon website or app. Navigate to your orders and find the item you want to return. For this example, I'm returning a gym lock.

Step 2: Select a Reason for Return

Amazon will ask you why you're returning the item. Common reasons include it being damaged, or you simply not needing it. I'll choose "I don't need this."

Step 3: Packaging Details

You'll be asked if the item is in its original packaging. If it is, select "Yes." Amazon also allows you to return multiple items together, even if they're not from the same order. This can be convenient if you have several returns.

Step 4: Choose Your Return Method

Next, you can choose to exchange the item, get a refund to your Amazon balance, replace it with the same item if it was broken, or refund it to the card you used for the purchase. I recommend refunding it to the original card.

Step 5: Select a Drop-off Location

You'll then be asked where you want to return the item. Common options include:

  • Whole Foods drop-off
  • Amazon drop-off locations
  • UPS Store drop-off
  • Kohl's drop-off

Tips for Drop-off Locations

  • UPS Store: Convenient if it's close to your home.
  • Kohl's: They often give you a $5 coupon for your next Kohl's purchase.

Most drop-off options say "no box or label needed," but this depends on whether the item came from Amazon or a third-party seller. If it's a third-party seller, you might need to package it yourself.

Step 6: Confirm Your Return

Click "Confirm your return." Amazon will provide a return date, giving you plenty of time to complete the process.

Step 7: Return the Item

You'll receive a barcode in the app and via email. The email will include a QR code and details about where to return the item. Simply take the item and the QR code to the designated drop-off location.

Step 8: Refund Process

After dropping off the item, you'll usually receive a refund notification from Amazon within an hour or two.
